22 October 2013 - The Australian Self Medication Industry (ASMI) has today welcomed the appointment of George Tambassis as the new national president of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and paid tribute to his predecessor Kos Sclavos after eight years at the helm.

Acknowledging Mr Tambassis' commitment to ensuring the ongoing viability of community pharmacy as a critical health provider, ASMI Executive Director Dr Deon Schoombie said:
"ASMI, over many years, has enjoyed a strong, collaborative partnership with the Pharmacy Guild. Together we have been focused on initiatives that support the expanded role of pharmacists in primary healthcare delivery and entrench a powerful preventative health culture in the community, including the need for greater self care.
"In particular, the Pharmacy Guild has been a critical partner of ASMI's in seeking political support for the establishment of an Australian Self Care Alliance, which would aim to improve individual and public health outcomes as well as the efficiency of the Australian health system."

Dr Schoombie added that the Pharmacy Guild has played an instrumental role in contributing to ASMI's proposal for an alternative regulatory model which will permit branded consumer communication of Pharmacist Only (Schedule 3/S3) Medicines.
"ASMI looks forward to working closely with Mr Tambassis to see these important initiatives come to fruition," Dr Schoombie continued.

As previously stated, ASMI extends its appreciation to outgoing president Kos Sclavos for his outstanding commitment to the pharmacy profession and community pharmacy in Australia.

"Among his many significant achievements, Kos is to be congratulated for taking the pharmacy profession into the digital era, with successful initiatives such as eHealth and electronic prescriptions and Project Stop to track sales of pseudoephedrine."
"Kos has been a progressive and influential leader and a strong driving force behind of number of industry initiatives aimed at improving the health of Australians. We are confident that George Tambassis will bring the same level of energy and vision to the role," said Dr Schoombie.
